Join the Study

We are seeking participants aged between 55-80 years of age, who are fluent in English with no major neurological illness.

What will I do as a participant?

The BACH study is a longitudinal, 5-year study. You will be invited to attend two in-person assessment days at the Alfred Hospital (in your first and fourth year) and complete short telephone follow-ups each year.

What is involved:

  • blood tests

  • a medical history interview

  • some learning and memory tests

  • a brain MRI scan and an optional lumbar puncture

  • wearing a sleep and activity monitoring watch for 14 days

  • 24hr home blood pressure monitor

  • overnight PSG sleep study in the comfort of your own home

How will my involvement help?

Your generous participation will provide foundations for important scientific discoveries about improving brain health in the face of ageing. The BACH study is unique because we capture so many different markers of health. These measures allow us to make important insights into what aspects of health and lifestyle are most important for maintaining brain health. Each component of this study is equally important to help identify factors that might protect against dementia and we hope that this comprehensive assessment will contribute to a better understanding of dementia onset and dementia prevention.

What do I get out of the study?

We provide information to participants throughout the completion of the study. We will provide you with a copy of your blood results, a report summarising your sleep patterns, your 24 hour blood pressure levels, some images from your brain MRI scan and following completion of the overnight sleep study, analysis of your sleep (information about your brain waves, oxygen levels, heart rate and breathing overnight).

Participants also receive study updates as well as the latest research findings in the field from time to time.
